Day Today

Dhaka, June 14 (simana) — The Japanese ambassador has said the policy changes that accompany every regime change in Bangladesh are a great problem for investment.

"Once a policy is introduced, it should be continued even if the government changes," Tamotsu Shinotsuka told a seminar at Dhaka Reporters' Unity on Tuesday.

He called on the government to address the obstacles towards an investor-friendly environment.

Shinotsuka said industrialisation required a talented workforce.

"Both Japan and Bangladesh have to build up a labour-intensive economy. Only skilled and talented workers can move such economies forward."

Foreign minister Dipu Moni, present at the event, said Bangladesh was one of the most politically stable countries in Asia.

"We are turning the nation into a regional hub by increasing road and rail connections with neighbouring countries," she added.

She said Japan was the largest donor country to Bangladesh, which had given $8.56 billion to the country from 1972 to 2010.

Dipu Moni said on the occasion of the 40 years of diplomatic relationships between the two nations in 2012, there would be special programmes in both countries.

Shinotsuka reminded that Japan had also been an aid-seeking country after the Second World War.
