Students caned out of dorms

Chittagong, June 14 (bdnews24.com) — Police have allegedly charged batons and forced demonstrating students out of the dormitories of the Chittagong Marine Fisheries Academy following orders from the principal of the institution.

Twenty-three injured were admitted to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) following the incident around 9pm on Tuesday.

Police, however, said the students were brought out of the hall after talks from 5pm to 9pm.

"We had to scare several students as they denied to leave the dormitory," Chittagong Metropolitan Police assistant commissioner (Port) A K M Imran Bhuiyan told simana.

Principal Capt A T G M Sarker declared summer vacation until June 30, before the raid was carried out by police, following a meeting with the agitating students, who have been demonstrating since Saturday leaving classes and examinations.

Their demands include recognising the three-year Pre-sea Training and declaring equal Fishing Officer Class-1 and Merchant Officer Class-3 certificates.

The college situated on the southern bank of Karnaphuli is registered under the National University and run by the fisheries and livestock ministry.
